Choosing a format
- JPEG — the safe default for photographs. Universally supported, small at 75–85% quality.
- WebP — typically 25–35% smaller than JPEG at the same visual quality. Supported by every current browser, but some older desktop software still can't open it.
- PNG — lossless, and the right choice for screenshots, logos and anything with sharp edges or transparency. Photos saved as PNG come out very large.
Resizing uses the browser's own high-quality image scaler. Shrinking a 12-megapixel phone photo to 1920 px usually cuts the file by 90% with no visible difference on a screen.
Metadata, including GPS coordinates from your camera, is dropped during re-encoding. That is normally what you want before sending a photo to someone.
