How this compresses, and when it won't
Each page is rendered to a bitmap and re-encoded as a JPEG at the quality you choose, then written into a new PDF. This is the same lossy approach server-side compressors use on scanned documents, and it works extremely well on them — a 40 MB phone-camera scan routinely comes out under 2 MB.
It is the wrong tool for a text document exported from Word or LaTeX. Those files are compact vector text already, and rasterising them makes the file larger while making the text blurry and unselectable. If that happens, this tool tells you and offers to keep the original.
What is lost
- Selectable text and searchability — pages become images. Scans of paper had neither to begin with.
- Links, bookmarks and form fields.
- Fine detail, according to the quality and resolution you pick.
